Temperance Tarot: Meaning, Symbolism & The Art of Balance
Not Monumental? Think Again.
For a long time, I didn’t think much of the Temperance tarot card. It lacked the monumental weight of cards like Death, The Tower, or Judgement. Death is final, The Tower is catastrophic, and Judgement is the moment of reckoning. But Temperance? It felt… mild in comparison.
Then I delved into Kabbalah, and suddenly, Temperance became not just important—but perhaps the most monumental trump in the deck.
Temperance & The Light at the End of the Tunnel
To understand Temperance, we must examine its path on the Tree of Life. This card represents the journey from Yesod (Foundation) to Tipheret (Beauty)—a passage from our lower material world into our Higher Self.

But Temperance is not an experience itself—it is the method through which experience is attained. It is the process of balancing opposing forces:
• Spirit tempers the Ego, bringing higher wisdom into the body
• The Ego tempers the Spirit, grounding it in reality
• Fire (Wands) and Water (Cups) merge to produce Air (Swords), manifesting within Earth (Pentacles)
This alchemy of opposites creates a harmonious new state of being.
The Golden Mean: The Power of Moderation
Both Kabbalah and Aristotle teach that there is no absolute good or evil. A well-intentioned person who dedicates themselves completely to helping others may exhaust themselves to the point where they can no longer function. Is that still good?
Temperance teaches that true wisdom lies in balance. Only by merging opposites within ourselves—and maintaining equilibrium on the Middle Pillar—can we reach our Higher Self and true spiritual wisdom.

The angel in the Temperance
Diana is also the goddess of the Moon, symbolizing intuition and subconscious cycles. She carries a bow and arrowacross her body, and a small arrow points at her heart—symbolizing the balance between her masculine intellect and feminine body.
Her posture reflects balance:
• One foot on land (Malkut, the material world)
• One foot in water (Tipheret, the subconscious and Higher Self)
This positioning signifies the merging of the conscious and unconscious mind, a reminder that true harmony is achieved through both spiritual awareness and practical application.
Alchemy in Action: Fire & Water Become One

This represents the alchemy of spiritual transformation—the process by which opposites combine and evolve into something greater.
A skull appears on the cauldron, subtly referencing Death, reminding us that change is essential for transformation.
At the base of the image, we see:
• A White Lion who drank water
• A Red Eagle who drank blood
Their colors have changed, symbolizing how elemental forces shift when exposed to new influences. This is the essence of Temperance—not suppression of extremes, but their refinement into a unified force.
The Temperance Card in Readings

Temperance in the Thoth Tarot
In Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot, Temperance is renamed “Art”, emphasizing the alchemy of transformation. In this deck, the angel is seen mixing forces into a new creation, reinforcing the idea that moderation is not passive but an active, creative process.

Final Thoughts
The Temperance tarot is a reminder that balance is not about restriction but about mastery. It teaches that opposing forces must merge and refine each other to create something new and whole.
At its core, Temperance is the card of spiritual evolution through integration. Whether guiding us toward balance in relationships, career, or personal growth, it reveals that moderation, patience, and harmony are the keys to lasting transformation.
To sum it up in one phrase: everything in moderation.
