The Tree of Life and the Minor Arcana: Understanding Their Kabbalistic Connection

Mapping the Minor Arcana to the Tree of Life

The placement of the Minor Arcana aligns directly with the Tree of Life in Kabbalah. The numbered cardscorrespond to the Sephirot, with Aces linked to Keter (pure spirit) and Tens ending in Malkut (the material world). However, before diving into the number cards, we must first examine the Court Cards and their role in this structure.

The Four Worlds and the Court Cards

In Part I, we discussed the Four Worlds of the Tree of Life and their connection to the Tetragrammaton (יהוה). Each World corresponds to an Element:

י      Yod – Fire

ה      Heh – Water

ו      Vav – Air

ה      Heh Final – Earth

Understanding the Court Cards Through Kabbalah

To better comprehend the Court Cards, we can liken them to a family unit:

👑 King (Chokmah) – Father (active, masculine)

👑 Queen (Binah) – Mother (receptive, feminine)

⚔ Knight/Prince (Tipheret) – Heir to the throne, balance of forces

🌿 Page/Princess (Malkut) – Keeper of the material realm

(Note: Some Tarot decks replace Prince with Knight and Princess with Page.)

Following theAs Above, So Below principle, the Princess (Page) represents the beginning stage of development, residing in Malkut, the physical world. As she progresses, she ascends the Tree of Life, eventually meeting the Prince, and together, they continue the spiritual ascent, eventually becoming Queen and King. This cycle repeats endlessly, illustrating the eternal nature of spiritual evolution.

The Tetragrammaton and the Court Cards

Each Court Card corresponds to one of the four letters of the Tetragrammaton (יהוה), which also aligns with the Elements:

י      King (Yod – Fire, active, initiating)

ה      Queen (Heh – Water, receptive, formative)

ו      Prince/Knight (Vav – Air, dynamic, balancing)

ה      Princess/Page (Heh Final – Earth, material, grounding)

Thus, when analyzing a Court Card in a Tarot reading, we must consider both its Sephirah (origin) and its suit (elemental nature).

Unlike the Major Arcana, which represents karmic forces, the Court Cards symbolize personal choices, often pointing to decisions, influences, or individuals affecting a situation.

For Example:

Minor Arcana

Queen of Cups

The Queen of Cups (Water of Water) fully embodies emotional depth, intuition, and receptivity.

Queen of Swords

Queen of Swords

The Queen of Swords (Water of Air) blends intellect and emotion, often leading to rational decision-making yet emotional suppression.

The Numbered Cards and the Four Worlds

The Aces sit at the top of the Tree of Life in Keter, embodying pure potential. However, whether this potential manifests fully depends on the energy of the subsequent Sephirot.

To further categorize the numbered cards, we place them into the Four Kabbalistic Worlds:

י      Atziluth (Fire): 2s and 3s

ה      Briah (Water): 4s, 5s, 6s

ו      Yetzirah (Air): 7s, 8s, 9s

ה      Assiah (Earth): 10s

When analyzing a Minor Arcana card, we must consider both its Sephirah placement and the influence of its World.

For Example:

Minor Arcana

7 of Swords

(Netzach in Yetzirah) – Netzach represents Victory, and Yetzirah aligns with Air (thought, strategy). This card suggests a mindset of winning at all costs, often linked to deception, manipulation, or strategic cunning.

4 of Pentacles

(Chesed in Assiah) – Chesed represents Mercy and generosity, while Assiah is the world of material reality. This combination suggests financial security, protection of resources, and stability—like rainfall ensuring a good harvest.
