Kabbalah Basics:
Kabbalah & the tarot: the spiritual connection
When discussing a Tarot card’s meaning, I often refer to the Tree of Life—a fundamental concept in Kabbalah. Terms like “Paths” and “Sephirot” frequently appear in esoteric Tarot interpretations. But what do these terms truly mean, and how do they connect to Tarot readings?
In my course, TAROT FINAL FRONTIER, I explore the historical and mystical connections between Tarot and Kabbalah. Just as Astrology, Tarot, and Kabbalah form an interconnected system of wisdom, understanding the Tree of Life’s structure enhances your ability to read Tarot with greater depth and accuracy.
The Tree of Life: A Blueprint for Universal Creation
The Tree of Life represents an abstract concept—the structure of universal creation. Since this idea transcends the physical world, it cannot be fully described in words or images. However, to make sense of it, we rely on visual and verbal explanations that help us understand its significance.
The Tree of Life consists of ten Sephirot (see Figure 1), meaning “emanations”—ten states of existence through which Ein Sof (The Infinite) reveals itself and continuously shapes both the physical realm and the higher spiritual dimensions.
These Sephirot are not points in time or space; rather, they represent different states of being. To manifest creation, The Infinite projected itself downward, moving from pure spirit (Keter, the First Sephirah) into our material world(Malkut). As we move downward through the Sephirot, we become further removed from the source of divine energy. Each Sephirah represents a unique spiritual state, forming a pathway of manifestation from the highest divine essenceto the tangible world.
The Triangular Structure of the Tree of Life
The Sephirot are arranged in three interconnected triangles, each representing different levels of spiritual consciousness:
🔺 Supernal Triangle – Keter, Chokmah, and Binah (Divine Consciousness & Spiritual Heights)
🔺 Ethical Triangle – Chesed, Gevurah, and Tipheret (Moral Balance & Personal Growth)
🔺 Astral Triangle – Netzach, Hod, and Yesod (Emotional and Psychological Influence)
At the bottom sits Malkut, our physical world, disconnected from the spiritual planes above.
Much like electrical circuits, each pair of opposite Sephirot generates a third force, forming balanced energetic pathways. This triangular structure reflects how divine energy flows downward from pure spirit to tangible form.
The Three Pillars of Kabbalah
The Tree of Life is also structured into three Pillars (see Figure 3):
🕊 Pillar of Mercy (Right Side) – Chesed, Netzach, and Chokmah (Expansive, Generous Energy)
⚖ Pillar of Equilibrium (Center) – Keter, Tipheret, Yesod, and Malkut (Balance, Harmony, and the Middle Path)
🔥 Pillar of Severity (Left Side) – Gevurah, Hod, and Binah (Discipline, Restraint, and Judgment)
Each Sephirah is perfectly balanced by its counterpart, creating harmonic pathways of spiritual evolution. Every individual navigates these Pillars in their personal spiritual journey—sometimes choosing the strict path of Severity, other times embracing the nurturing energy of Mercy. However, true spiritual ascent lies in walking the Middle Pillar, where balance and harmony allow for the most serene and enlightened journey upward.
The Four Worlds of Kabbalah: A Layered Reality
One final structural division of the Tree of Life is the Four Worlds, each corresponding to a letter in the Tetragrammaton (יהוה – YHVH) (see Figure 4).
🌟 Atziluth (Yod) – The World of Pure Spirit (Primal Fire)
🌊 Briah (Hey) – The World of Intellect & Divine Creation (Primal Water)
💨 Yetzirah (Vav) – The Formative World of Structure (Primal Air)
🌍 Assiah (Hey Final) – The Physical World (Primal Earth & Material Existence)
Each world acts as a layer of reality, influencing both spiritual development and Tarot interpretations.
To visualize this concept, think of the Tree of Life as an architectural firm:
🏛 Atziluth – The Board of Directors (Divine Visionaries)
📊 Briah – Upper Management (CEOs & Strategists)
📐 Yetzirah – Architects (Planning & Design)
🛠 Assiah – The Construction Crew (Physical Manifestation)
Just as ideas flow from concept to construction, divine energy descends through these four worlds, shaping our reality.
To break it down, look at the Tree as you would an Architectural /Firm. At the head is the Board of the Directors (Atzilut). The Board charts out the grand vision of the firm and passes it down to Management (CEO, CFO and the Like – BRIAH). These guys will break down the big vision into tangible projects that they will pass down to the department of Architects – buildings, parks, restaurants, shops – the works! The Architects (YETZIRAH), will draw up blue prints and 3-D models of the projects created by management. The projects will become clear and precise as they take shape and form… But it will be down to the construction crew (ASSIAH) to create physical interpretation of these projects.
Ascending the Tree: A Journey of Spiritual Growth
Contrary to what many assume, the Tree of Life is not static. As we move upward, we pass through ten Sephirot within each world, creating a multi-layered spiritual path.
For instance:
🔼 Reaching Keter in Assiah places us at the first stage of Yetzirah
🔼 Advancing to Keter in Yetzirah brings us to Malkut of Briah
🔼 The final goal is to reach Keter in Atziluth, the highest level of divine unity
Understanding this cyclical journey allows for a deeper comprehension of Tarot’s esoteric wisdom and spiritual evolution.
