The Death Tarot: Meaning, Symbolism & Transformation
Death is Scary – Or Is It?
The Death tarot card terrifies many people. Clients panic when it appears in a reading, assuming it means literal death. But here’s the truth—Death is not an ending, it is a transformation.
For me, Death is the most powerful and liberating card in the deck.
Why? Because there is no ‘Birth’ card in tarot.
• Death and Birth are one and the same.
• Every ending is a beginning.
• Every beginning is an ending of something else.

• Where does it start? Where does it end?
• It is an eternal cycle—just like Death.
And so, Death is not destruction—it is a gateway to renewal.
Death on the Tree of Life: The Path of Evolution
On the Tree of Life, the Path of Death leads from Netzach (Victory) to Tipheret (Beauty).
• This is the path of personal evolution.
• The Ego (Personality) must undergo death to be reborn as the Higher Self.
• It is a shift in consciousness—a realization that what we call ‘Death’ is merely a transition.
We must sacrifice attachment to the physical world in order to awaken.
As Carl Jung put it:
“By descending into the unconscious, the conscious mind puts itself in a perilous condition, for it is apparently extinguishing itself.”

Nun & The Fish: The Motion of Rebirth
The Hebrew letter associated with Death is Nun (נ), meaning “Fish.”

• Carl Jung described the alchemical fish as “Cinedian”, from the Greek word kineo, meaning “to set in motion.”
• Death sets in motion a new beginning.
Every death is a rebirth. Every rebirth is a death.
Scorpio & The Three Stages of Transformation

Scorpio has three forms, all of which appear in the Death tarot:
1️⃣ The Scorpion – The lowest form: poisonous, primitive, and dangerous.
2️⃣ The Serpent – The transition: wisdom, shedding the old, moving toward enlightenment.
3️⃣ The Eagle – The highest form: soaring above, seeing beyond the physical world.
The Death card mirrors this transformation—from something low and fearful into something free and powerful.
The Fool’s Journey & The Angel of Death
In this card, the soul stands at the threshold of transition, preparing to cross over.

• The Fool stands before a tunnel of light, ready for a life review.
• He is no longer The Fool—he has awakened.
Death is not a punishment—it is an initiation.
Death vs. The Tower: Understanding the Difference

• The Tower = Sudden destruction, chaos, upheaval. You are forced to change.
• Death = Gradual transformation, necessary endings, rebirth. You are ready to change.
The Death Card in Readings
In a tarot reading, Death signifies an unavoidable transformation—a necessary ending that leads to renewal.
Death in the Thoth Tarot
In Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot, Death is not a grim figure, but a dancing skeleton—symbolizing the joy of transformation.
Crowley’s Death teaches that:
• Destruction is necessary for renewal.
• Death should not be feared but embraced.
• The ego must die for the soul to evolve.

Final Thoughts
The Death tarot is a card of liberation, not loss.
• It reminds us that endings are always beginnings.
• Fear of change is fear of growth.
• The more we resist, the harder the transformation will be.
If Death appears in your reading, ask yourself:
• What transformation am I resisting?
• What do I need to release to move forward?
• How can I embrace the cycle of renewal?
Because Death is not the end—it is the beginning of something new.
